Abraham Lincoln: His Fight for Freedom and Equality Throughout history, slavery has been a controversial topic in the United States. There have been many revolts and rebellions, such as Gabriel’s Rebellion or Nat Turner’s Rebellion, fought over the abolition of slavery or for African Americans to be able to receive the same rights as those of white people. Many people have fought for this cause and one of those people is Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which is one of the major stepping stones that led to the abolition of slavery. â€Å"Abraham Lincoln has been regarded as one of America’s greatest heroes†¦his historical role as savior of the Union and emancipator of the slaves creates a legacy that endures.† (Abraham) Abraham Lincoln was born February 2, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was the second child of Thomas Lincoln, a frontiersman, and Mary Hanks Lincoln, he had two siblings -Sarah, who was born February 10, 1807 and Thomas, around 1812, who died in infancy. The family moved from Kentucky to Indiana in 1817, due to a lawsuit disputing the title of the Lincoln farm. His mother, Mary, died in October 5, 1818 of Milk Sickness, when Abraham was only 9 years old. Milk Sickness is caused by cattle eating White SnakeRoot. His father, Thomas, eventually remarried in December of 1819 to Sarah Bush Johnson. Sarah was a widow and also had three children. As a child, Lincoln detested hard labor and truly enjoyed reading.
